Let's Make Central Singapore Our Most Beautiful Home!

Set against a backdrop of greenery and a prominent display of the tagline “Let’s Make Central Singapore Our Most Beautiful Home”, Central Singapore Clean & Green carnival was held on the 5th and 6th December 2009 at the newly opened City Square Mall, Singapore's first eco-mall!

To kick start the event, the Kallang CC Drumming Group gave a rousing welcome to our Guest of Honour, Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Mr Wong Kan Seng and other VIPs by using reusable household items like brooms, pails and pans to create upbeat music.

The highlight of the evening was the launch ceremony of P.A.C.T, which stands for Partnership to Activate the Community to Treasure our environment. Guest of Honour DPM Wong Kan Seng turned a gear lever to activate the other 3 gears, representing NEA, the community at Central Singapore District and City Square Mall, to interlock one another as a symbol of partnership and cooperation. Mr Zainudin Nordin, Mayor of Central Singapore District, Mr Andrew Tan, NEA CEO and Mr Chia Ngiang Hong, the Group GM of City Developments Ltd, which owns City Square Mall accompanied DPM on stage during the launch.

A true 3P Partnership between the community of Central Singapore NEA and City Square Mall!

P.A.C.T signifies the beginning of a new tripartite relationship, which supports the Central Singapore Environmental Sustainability Plan. The Plan which outlines a 10-year Clean & Green commitment, was launched at the Central Singapore Public Health Forum in July 2009 by our Minister Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Mayor Zainudin and CEO of NEA. Under P.A.C.T, there will be year long partnership activities at City Square Mall covering various environmental topics such as recycling, personal & food hygiene and energy conservation. City Square Mall will set aside mall space for related exhibition and roll out a series of promotions in line with an environmental theme of the month to raise awareness and incentivise shoppers to act. NEA CRO and Central Singapore CDC will also be engaging the grassroots leaders and Youth Environmental Guardians to conduct environmental activities in the mall.

During the Central Singapore Clean & Green carnival, our guests and participants were introduced to many interactive Clean & Green activities. Some of the highlights were:

A Tower Tall of Recyclables
The entourage begun their tour with their first stop at a whopping 2.5 metres tall recyclables tower. The tower by LASALLE College of the Arts was made entirely of recyclables collected from the residents of Jalan Besar GRC since August 2009. The aim was for the public to take home the message of practicing the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle). This 5000kg of recyclables collected were converted to $5000 in cash by Purechem Veolia Environmental Services Pte Ltd to benefit low-income families.

Clean & Green Ideas @ Work
Central Singapore schools conducted hands-on sessions for the participants to learn how to make products like natural mosquito repellent, flowers and wall clocks from recycled materials. Participants also got to bring home the items they made.

The Clean and Green carnival seeks to motivate the community to actively participate in our Central Singapore Environmental Sustainabiliry Plan. DPM Wong summarises it all in his quote at the Central Singapore Environmental Sustainability Plan showcase:

“All efforts to keep Singapore clean and green require the active participation of every Singaporean. This is the only way to sustain our efforts to make Singapore a liveable city.”
